Good Drainage Is Important For Your Northern Virginia Landscape
Improper drainage is detrimental to your Falls Church, VA yard and landscape,
causing standing water, barren areas and other landscape-related problems.
Several methods are available for improving the drainage in your yard,
as well as improving water flow around your plants, trees, shrubs and
for your grass. A simple drainage system collects water and directs it
away from your home and lawn. Installing a drainage ditch and oxygenating
your soil will improve growing conditions.
- Drainage Tip #1: Plan a Drainage System: Installing a basic drainage system
is the most effective way to solve your major drainage issues. Contact your
local municipality to familiarize yourself with local building regulations or
to ensure your landscape architect knows them. Most areas require an inspection
and approval of the drainage plan, so it’s always better to be safe than
sorry.
- Drainage Tip #2: Don’t Forget the Drain Pipes: Typically, PVC pipe is
used for drainage pipe. Normally, these pipes are perforated on the top and
bottom to absorb the excess water that flows through the soil. The drainage
pipe should be at least 4 inches around and installed at a 1 to 2 percent grade.
Use a ”T“ connector to join any pipes and make sure the ”T“
points up rather than down to prevent additional accumulation of water.
- Drainage Tip #3: Dig a Drainage Ditch: The world needs ditch diggers too,
and you may need one yourself for this project. The drainage ditch carries water
and debris away from you home when installed properly. As long as the drainage
ditch remains free from clutter and debris, the water will easily flow elsewhere.
