Fall Gardening Projects For Around Your Northern Virginia Home

Even though most people think of fall as the perfect time to plant trees, grasses and spring-blooming bulbs, it also is the time to prepare for winter and the coming spring. When you think about the warm sunshine and new life of spring, it makes getting through the cold Northern Virginia winters a little bit easier.

The fall months are the perfect time to remove all the dying annuals, dead branches and leaves and add to your compost pile. Leave the parts of your plants that are alive alone, since if you prune them in the fall, you may end up with new buds in the winter that will only die during the first freeze. Roses are the only exception to this rule of the green thumb. Roses are highly susceptible to cold and wind damage, and should be pruned back by about one-third of the new growth experienced during the summer months.

Don’t forget to protect your landscaping during the fall months as well. Spend the time to wrap your shrubs with twine to keep help them keep their shape, and to protect them from breaking when snow accumulates on top. Tie the twine to the trunk of the shrub and wrap it around in an upward spiral, then repeat with a downward spiral to complete the project. Also, clip your hedges so the sides taper upward a bit to prevent snow from falling between the branches.

Many plants around your Washington D.C. home will benefit greatly from a little space of their own. This means it’s time to divide your plants, as should be done every few years. Plants that bloom in the spring or summer can safely be divided in the fall for bloom in the coming months. Perennials with roots that create shoots from the base are great for splitting. If you spot a plant with dead foliage in the middle but health plant growth around the edges, this is a sure sign it is time to divide the plant.
