Caring for Greenery

Should You Fertilize Your Ornamental Trees and Ornamental Shrubs?

Contrary to popular belief, ornamental trees and ornamental shrubs can benefit greatly from standard tree care — including fertilization. Application of fertilizer is one of the easiest and safest ways a homeowner can care for their ornamental trees and ornamental shrubs.

Throwing fertilizer on your lawn and garden is almost second nature to most, but how often do we think of taking the same care with your ornamental trees — they want food too. Like all other plants — including grass, vegetables and fruits — ornamental trees and ornamental shrubs depend on sunlight, air, water and specific minerals in the soil for natural growth. The necessary nutrients are abundant in the forest due to the annual fall of leaves and twigs, which eventually decompose and replenish the nutrients in the soil. Since you take great care of your lawn to remove the leaves and twigs each year, you instead must artificially replenish the soil.

Building a new home requires the movement of soil, either for the foundation of the house or for digging the basement, and this practice alone will disturb the natural nutrients in the soil. Fertilizer is vitally important to ornamental trees and ornamental shrubs in this particular circumstance — if in no other.

Sidewalks, driveways and other building foundations, which all inhibit natural root growth causing less than normal productivity plant growth, surround most homes in urban settings — especially in the ever- popular subdivision. Providing fertilizer in these environments gives your ornamental trees the extra boost needed to develop vibrant leaf color, stimulate growth and aids in tree recovery from damage of insects and disease.

Every plant is different, but if your ornamental trees and ornamental shrubs seem to have leaves that are smaller than normal, the color is slightly off, the branch begin to break and contain many twigs you should consider fertilizing them.
