Designing a Children’s Garden for Maximum Fun and Outdoor Play
Looking for a way to encourage your kids to put down the video game controller and go outside to play? Consider designing a children’s garden for your Reston, Centreville, or Oakton home that gives your kids a place to play and call their own.
Encourage your children to help you design the garden to give them a sense of ownership and pride in their outdoor space. Together choose a site that is accessible and within a safe distance from your home and then take a trip to the nursery to choose plants. Consider planting vegetables in the garden that your child could learn to grow – and enjoy eating! Kid-friendly vegetables with large seeds and a rapid growth rate include pumpkins, zucchini, cucumbers, and radishes.
If you have the space, choose tall, dramatic flowers, such as sunflowers, or large ornamental grasses to give your child a place to explore in the garden. Include a small water element or pond in the garden; to give your child practice in taking care of a pet, consider adding some pond-friendly fish. Encourage your child to maintain the garden, design stepping stones, or even create a welcome sign for the garden.
