The world of lawn care has changed dramatically throughout the years and choosing the right type of watering system for your Northern Virginia lawn and garden may seem to be a daunting task. But, removing the guess work can eliminate the confusion and help you make the right choice when it comes to watering your lawn and flowers.
An impulse sprinkler is a type of watering tool that provides a broad spray of water by breaking the water stream. This type of sprinkler attaches to the end of a garden hose and provides a much higher rate of water distribution and coverage than some other types of watering systems. The one downside to this type of watering tool is the need for high water pressure to ensure proper functioning. Also, an impulse sprinkler may provide too much pressure and water for small lawns.
Much like it sounds, a fan sprinkler is a watering tool that provides water to the ground coverings in a circular pattern — like that of a fan. Also attached to the end of a water hose, the fan sprinkler spins in a circular motion making it a great choice for watering round or irregular shaped lawns. However, for lawns that have corners, a fan sprinkler may not be the ideal choice since the water distribution pattern of a fan sprinkler may not reach those areas. The fan sprinkler motion also lends greatly to water evaporation, meaning a large portion of the water that leaves the sprinkler may not reach the ground before it evaporates.
To reach the optimal level of watering, most lawns and gardens require one inch of water per week from all sources, including that received from watering systems as well as any natural rainwater that may be absorbed. Investing in a rain gage, or even placing an empty container, at different locations throughout the area that is being watered is the best way to ensure your lawn and garden are receiving the full benefit of your watering system.
