How to Create a Beautiful Northern Virginia Herb Garden

Herb gardens are not only a wonderful addition to your Northern Virginia landscape, but also a treat for the senses and a boost for your buck. Generally inexpensive and easy to maintain, herb gardens typically pay for themselves, by supplying straight-from-the-soil culinary ingredients that are no match for pre-packaged, dried herbs. Herbs can be culinary – such as basil, rosemary, parsley, and oregano – and/or medicinal, such as lavender, Echinacea, garlic and mint. Popular Northern Virginia herbs also include parsley, tarragon, sage, lemon grass and chives.

When developing your herb garden, keep in mind that herbs need plenty of sunlight – at least six hours a day – in order to thrive. Soil should be well-drained and herbs should be watered and clipped regularly, even if you’re not using them in your cooking.

Design options for your herb garden are limitless, as gardens can be large or small, depending on how many herbs you’d like to grow. The garden may even be a collection of potted herbs, as growing herbs in small containers allows you to adjust soil mixtures to suit specific plants while keeping them separated – herbs can spread rampantly by seed and by runners. Many gardeners choose to create raised bed herb gardens in order to regulate soil levels for each plant, contain the herb plants, and keep weeds out.

Herbs are wild in nature, and tend to grow in wild fashion, spreading quickly throughout the garden space. Consider creating a formal herb garden to offset herbs’ overgrown appearance, complete with stone- or brick-lined paths that keep the plants within easy range for maintenance and picking. Formal herb gardens are generally laid out in a series of beds creating a geometric form. A central feature, such as a sundial or birdbath, can bring the entire herb garden look together. Try to create your herb garden as close to the kitchen as possible, so walking outside and cutting herbs needed for your meal is as simple as possible.
