Installing a koi pond in your Great Falls, Herndon, Fairfax, or other Northern Virginia landscape means augmenting your home with a peaceful, beautiful water element. Watching your koi swim and enjoying the presence of water in your backyard is a great pleasure – but to fully enjoy your koi pond, you must know how to keep your koi happy and healthy.
Koi care can be quite complex, but take solace in the fact that koi are by nature long-lived and resilient. The two most important pillars of koi care are keeping high-quality pond water and proper koi nutrition.
First, to keep koi healthy, you must maintain high-quality pond water. Just like an indoor aquarium, the pond must be cleaned and maintained on a regular basis. Koi ponds should undergo seasonal and routine maintenance. Seasonal maintenance should be done about twice per year, while routine maintenance should be performed on an as-needed basis depending on the pond environment, climate, and location. Seasonal maintenance consists of a thorough cleaning of the pond. Koi must be removed during seasonal maintenance so you’re able to drain the pond, scrub the sides of the pond and any rocks free of algae, clean the pump and any other parts, and inspect all pipes and tubing for leaks or cracks.
During routine cleaning, you should clean the pond of excess algae and waste, as well as drain about 10 percent of the water in the pond and replace it with fresh water. Just because your pond water may be clear doesn’t mean the water is of high quality. Some ponds with clear water may be lethal to koi, since it was lethal enough to prevent algae growth. Therefore, you must routinely check your water quality via proper filtration and water testing.
The second main facet of koi care is proper nutrition. By nature, koi have a large appetite for anything in front of them and will keep eating even after they’re full. Therefore, you must take care to feed koi only as much as they need to eat in a few minutes, and nothing more. Overfeeding can lead to sick koi, while uneaten food can deteriorate the pond’s water quality. There are many high-quality commercially-prepared koi feeds on the market today that contain instructions on how much to feed your koi.
