Landscape Catch Basins — a Drainage Solution for Your Northern Virginia Yard
If your Alexandria, Ft. Belvoir, Arlington, or other Northern Virginia yard suffers from poor drainage and an abundance of sitting water, consider installing a catch basin to bolster your yard’s drainage. Cutting down on the surface water in your yard can lessen plant diseases and help keep your plantings healthy, as well as help prevent leaks and moisture in your home’s foundation and walls.
Catch basins collect excess surface water from turf areas, hardscaped areas, planter beds, and other landscape features. Excess water flows into a surface drainage system through catch basins, which collect debris and prevent pipe clogging.
Catch basins come in a number of different styles to accommodate drainage throughout areas in your landscape. For example, round catch basins and drainage gates are installed in turf areas, while square catch basins and grates are used around swimming pools and hardscaped area, such as driveways and walkways.
Catch basins require regular maintenance, including regularly clearing out debris so drainage is not inhibited. Every so often, use a garbage bag and rubber gloves to clean out such debris as leaves, grass, sticks, and mud. It’s a good idea to regularly clean out catch basins in the fall, a time during which leaves tend to pile up quickly.
