Protecting Your Northern Virginia Garden From Pests Naturally

Gardening is a hobby enjoyed by thousands across the country, and when the results are beautiful and bountiful, who can blame those enthusiasts. A well-kept garden can be enjoyed by everyone, whether it’s the sight of the beautiful flowers or the taste of the fresh vegetables on the table, a garden is both relaxing and fruitful. However, when pests invade, the story turns to one of frustration and sometimes anger.

When trying to kill the pests such as worms, insects and termites, the first thought is to use a pesticide, since that is what they are intended for. However, when a pesticide kills the uninvited guests it may also harm the guest of honor — the plants and flowers tend to so meticulously for months.

Rather than turn to chemicals, try a few natural techniques first.

• Using natural composting methods to create a rich, healthy soil, top-dress the soil around the plant to create strong, vigorous plants that can withstand an occasional visit from an insect.
• Seaweed mulch or spray contains iron, zinc, barium, calcium, sulfur and magnesium all of which promote healthy plant development and repels certain pests like slugs naturally.
• Most garden pests are plant specific, so rotate your crops and interplant your flowers. Doing this also prevents widespread infestation because if one plant is affected, the surrounding plants will be left alone.
