Common Pond Plants for Your Northern Virginia Landscape

Did you know that the presence of water plants is essential to pond health? Pond plants breathe in carbon dioxide and oxygenate pond water, adding real value to the pond environment by filtering the water and sheltering any fish or other inhabitants. Some pond plants even release bubbles of oxygen from their leaves, indicating the level of oxygen and health they bring to the pond.

Pond plants can be classified in four major groups: oxygenators, marginals, floaters, and aquatic plants. Each type of pond plant contributes to the health of the pond in its own way. Oxygenators produce lots of oxygen in the water, and are essential in water clarity. Oxygenators live completely submerged in water; common types include water buttercup, water violet, and willowmoss. Marginals are more ornamental in nature, and contribute to the health of a pond by providing cover for fish and frogs. Typically planted in pots along the edge of the pond, common marginals include papyrus and cattails.

Floaters live just below or on the water surface, while their roots grow down to the bottom of the water basin. Floaters keep algae away and add color and texture to a pond. Popular floating plants include duckweed, water lettuce, and water hyacinth. Finally, aquatic plants tend to be planted inside the pond and help keep the water clear by blocking out the sun’s rays and keeping the water cool. Pond owners typically choose water hawthorn, which grows in shady areas and features beautiful white flowers, or water lilies, which come in a wide range of colors and sizes.
