Old Man Winter brings cold temperatures, snow, ice and in some unfortunate cases, damage to your patio that will need to be repaired. Most homeowners can employ simple patio repair techniques, but if major patio repair work is needed, contact patio professionals to ensure the job is done properly.
Typically, damage is done to a patio when heavy objects are left on it through the winter. As the ground goes through several freeze-then-thaw cycles, the soil becomes weaker and will eventually cave under the weight of objects like umbrellas, lawn furniture and grills.
Even though stone patios or brick patios are designed to fluctuate during the freeze-thaw cycle, the pressure of an object can throw the balance of the stone or brick off and make it uneven. An uneven patio is not only unsightly, it also presents a stumbling block — or the perfect place to trip and fall.
Most patio repairs should be completed in the early summer months — like June — to ensure the ground has stabilized enough so your patio repair work will not be ruined again within weeks.
Stone patios, flagstone or any other type of mortared-stone patio, can be repaired with a few simple steps. If the mortar is broken, cracked or missing use a small chisel to remove the damaged area carefully, as you do not want to damage the actual stone. After the mortar has been removed us a brush to clean the area and rid it of excess dust and dirt.
Mix a batch of mortar according to the packaging directions, typically three parts mortar, five parts sand and only enough water to make it moist. Remember, you are making mortar, not pancake batter.
Put the mortar into the area that needs repairing with a trowel and then flatten it down with the trowel as well. Let it dry and your patio should be as good as new.
