Timber Retaining Walls a Great Option for Your Northern Virginia Landscape
Retaining walls act as strong structures that contain and stabilize soil and rock to prevent erosion on steep and sloped landscapes. In addition, retaining walls can help beautify a landscape and create visual interest.
Retaining walls come in many materials, including brick, concrete, stone, and timber. Timber has a number of unique attributes that make it a wonderful retaining wall material. Pleasing to the eye because of its natural wood material, treated timber retaining walls is strong and durable, as well as resistant to moisture, termites, and decay. Timber is relatively affordable, easily installed, and can be painted to match landscape design.
However, if untreated, timber can suffer from moisture, termite, rot, and warping issues. Timber retaining walls are suitable for small-scale retaining applications and often require cloth or plastic coverings to be placed beneath. These retaining walls should be inspected regularly for cracks and damage.
