Northern Virginia Winter Gardening

Winter brings blustery winds and snow, not ideal circumstances for enjoying your outdoor flower gardens. However, protecting your investments in the winter means less time and money spent in the spring.

Protecting your flowerpots is essential to not reinvesting in new ones in the spring. Flower gardens that offer protection from the elements allow homeowners to simply tuck their flowerpots away in a corner or any area that provides shelter. In landscaped areas that are not sheltered bringing the flowerpots in for winter storage is a better option. Protecting the flowerpots from extreme temperatures and heavy snow piles will prevent them from breaking.

The beauty of perennials is you do not have to replant them every year, which gives them the chance to grow bigger and stronger each year. Potted perennials may thrive in the summer but in the winter, the cold temperatures will kill the roots of the plants, no matter the size of the flowerpot. Ambitious gardeners may choose to bury the flowerpot for the winter by simply digging a hole the depth of the pot and burying it level with the top of the flowerpot and spread mulch around the base of the plant to provide additional warmth. When spring comes back around, simply dig the pot back up. An alternative is simply bringing the potted perennials inside to protect the roots of the plant. If storing the plants in an unheated room, wrap a piece of burlap around the pot to provide additional root protection.

Warm days in the winter are a welcome break but may wreak havoc on your rosebushes. Putting rose cones over your roses protects them from the elements, ensuring the plant survives another year. But those unexpected warm, sunny days may cause the temperature inside the rose cone to rise dramatically and cause damage. Rose cones equipped with vents make this easy to fix by simply opening the vent to let the heat escape. If your cones are not vented, simply remove the cone for the day. Replace the cones, or close the vents, after the sun goes down to ensure the plant is protected when the temperature drops at night.
