Old Man Winter is gearing up to show his face — welcome or not — to homeowners throughout the Northern Virginia area, and preparing your lawn and landscaping before he does is a good idea. Just because the weather is turning colder and leaves are browning on trees does not mean your landscaping duties are done for the year.
You may think grass stops growing in the fall since it requires mowing less frequently, the roots are actually growing deeper to prepare for the long, cold winter months. This makes fall the perfect time to fertilize and reseed the lawn. Providing nutrients to the lawn in the fall gives the needed boost to make it through the winter months and thrive once again in the spring.
If you have ”bald spots“ in your Alexandria, VA lawn, the fall also is the perfect time to address those issues with sod or grass seed. By laying sod on the bare spots you will see immediate results, and you can rest the winter months knowing your landscaping will be picture perfect in the spring. Always remember to keep the newly planted sod wet for the first week to ensure enough moisture is present in the soil to allow the roots to attach below the surface. After the first week, simply water the sod as needed.
Turn your attention to the shrubs and hedges incorporated into your landscaping plan as well. Pruning the shrubs and hedges is important to their overall health and will encourage growth when the warm weather returns to your Annandale, VA home. Once the leaves turn from lush green to a lesser brown color, this indicates the time is right for pruning.
Use caution when pruning though, always cut at a slight angle approximately one-quarter inch from the branch. This is a somewhat delicate task, and a professional landscaper may be better suited to perform the task. If over-pruned, you may end up with non-blooming shrubs and hedges in the spring — totally contradicting your efforts.
