How to Protect Your Northern Virginia Irrigation System During the Winter
Putting your irrigation system to bed for the winter months is important to keeping it functioning properly the next year. Pipes, sprinkler heads and valves must be drained to avoid from freezing and causing serious damage, and even personal injury in some cases.
Professional landscaping and lawn care services obviously have this process down to a science and for a reasonable fee can save you time while giving you the comfort of knowing the job is completed properly.
If a drain valve is not already part of your irrigation system, the landscaping professionals will install one and connect an air hose to force compressed air through the lines to remove any water that may remain from the last watering of the season.
Once the water has been removed from the irrigation system, the water source for the system will be disconnected — or turned off depending on the design of your particular setup. After the water is no longer connected, compressed air will once again be forced through the connection points to blow the remaining water out.
The water line between the backflow prevention device and the shut-off valve must also be drained, and again, compressed water will be used.
Proper installation and winterizing techniques are essential to caring for your irrigation system. The purpose of the underground sprinkler system was most likely for convenience and not caring for it properly will leave you with anything but a convenient situation.
